Emily is the host of a paranormal television show. Her mission is to debunk all myths and urban legends. But when she meets Satan in a haunted house and calls him a fraud, the repercussions change her life. Satan kidnaps her six-year-old daughter, and Emily vows vengeance. For centuries, demons have been abducting people and pulling them through wormholes to an alternate universe. The hapless victims are then tortured for the demons' pleasure. Because humans are out of sync with time, they cannot die. They must endure the sadistic revelry for eternity. Emily will do anything to rescue her daughter--even if it means storming the underworld and battling the denizens of hell. But if she does somehow find her little girl--how will they find their way out?

Satan's Mirror is a classic horror story, and the reader should be prepared for graphic violence and, well, horror. That said, the book is also a grand adventure with richly drawn characters including the heroine/protagonist: Emily is resourceful, determined and, although often properly frightened, very brave. This is another extremely well written outing from the pen of author Roxanne Smolen. The story begins with a mystery that is unraveled and then an adventure whose action is fast, furious and non-stop. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for lovers of the horror and adventure genres.

Satan Mirror Roxanne Smolen 9780991567300 Books Reviews

I have been reading fantasy and science fiction for over fifty years, and this is one book that I consider truly innovative and unique. The author's concept of Hell as a resort for emotion-challenged aliens was mind blowing, and her idea of bone weapons was inspired. Also, her attention to detail in her description of places (like St. Augustine) grounded the fantasy in reality, making it that much more harrowing. A great read!
Storyline Roooooooxxxxxxxxanne! You don't have to turn on the red light! Wait... I mean, Ms. Roxanne Smolen's Satan's Mirror really captures the essence of evil and the enduring faith of mankind. Not much to do with *ahem* ladies of the night or Sting...

Emily has the world figured out she's a skeptic through and through. Nothing is as ever spooky, scary or terrifying as it seems. Emily is the host of an investigative show that disproves urban myths and unravels mysteries for the world to see.

When her boss gives her a lead to follow down in sunny Florida, things take a decidedly dark and evil twist. Ghosts, demons and disappearances abound as Emily tries to unravel the mystery of Satan's Mirror. A local legend that has otherworldly beginnings. Only when her own life begins to fall apart does Emily start to believe that something beyond rational explanation is the cause of the horrors...

Can Emily's sense and sensibilities keep her safe and help her find her missing daughter? Will she be able to find the strength in herself to do the impossible to fight the evil incarnate and maintain her sanity?

Grammar/Spelling I didn't notice any grammar or spelling issues. Yay!

Character Development Emily is an interesting woman. She's smart and determined and not easily swayed by the world around her. She even goes so far as to insist that her daughter face her fear of monsters headlong (much to her dismay as these kinds of monsters aren't exactly Sulley and Mike Wazowski). It was definitely easy to see the strength in Emily and even when she was in the horrors of hell - making her way to save her daughter - she tried to help everyone that she met. Even at the risk of running out of time and getting caught herself.

Writing Style The book could use a good hair cut with a pair of carefully wielded surgical scissors. What I mean by that is it has too much 'fluff' for my tastes and what I mean by 'fluff' is `extraneous description'. If it was a little less wordy, it would be more appealing to me. The method works well for Stephen King, apparently; but, I do find myself skimming in The King's books simply to get past the 'fluff'. I prefer a little less talk and a lot more action.

On the other hand, there are several instances where a lack of description really takes away from the story. For example, Emily decides to hide out at a bar in St. Augustine and the author describes what Emily ordered and she also mentioned that it looks like there is a stage for a live band (but not that one is performing). From this description, I wasn't really able to garner if Emily was actually able to "hide" in plain sight; meaning that I didn't know if the bar was busy or if it were empty and if she even did a good job at avoiding the police. It seems as if she's describing something for a report.

Continuity No issues with continuity.

Overall Rating 3+

I would say that this is a good novel to read for anyone who is interested in the paranormal and proving or disproving faith. Satan's Mirror presents us with an interesting take on the concept of hell and an all too familiar story about a woman fighting her way through her own skepticism and trying to save herself from Satan himself.
Emily Goodman is a former reporter who now travels the country hosting a reality TV show. Her job is to seek out paranormal activity and expose it for the fraud that it is. Her record for figuring out how-it's-done is perfect until she's sent to investigate Satan's Mirror, a mirror where (rumor has it) one can conjure up the devil. Unbeknownst to the victim (until it's too late) the mirror works both ways. Demons can also reach out and grab the human. It turns out that Hell is not where the wicked go after they die, but rather a resort where demons from another dimension go for vacation. And what do they do while on vacation? Kidnap humans through Satan's Mirror and feed off their pain and terror. The devil is more a proprietor working to keep his guests happy than the Lord of Darkness. It's a nice setup until they kidnap April, Emily's six-year-old little girl. Then the fun really begins as Emily enters the portal and goes to Hell to rescue her daughter.

Emily hurtled down hell's gullet. Light exploded with the force of a nuclear bomb. Through closed eyes, she saw flames. She smelled flesh burning, hair singeing. She imagined her limbs incinerating into ash, imagined her eyeballs bursting.
The blistering wind peeled back her lips. She clamped her jaws against it, feeling an unvoiced scream rip her throat. Writhing and contorting in endless agony, she fell through the bowels of the underworld.

Roxanne Smolen puts a new and creative twist on Hell. Sure there's the favorites like the lake of fire, but she adds new touches with dead trees that aren't exactly dead and absorb humans, acid rain (literally), along with some other goodies which I won't give away. The characters are solid but I would've liked to have seen a little more back story on a few of them, especially Ross, Emily's boss. Smolen did a good job of suspending disbelief although at times I found myself questioning Emily's stamina as she raced through Hell. I guess I can chalk it up to a mothers love for her daughter.
Satan's Mirror is quick paced and can easily be read in one or two sittings. The chapters are short so if you're in a time crunch, there are a lot of good stopping places. Some scenes are a bit graphic, this ain't Alice through the looking glass, but overall I'd say young adults will enjoy this book as much as adults.
If you crave horror and suspense buy SATAN'S MIRROR by Roxanne Smolen. The book will take you places you may not want to be, but you won't be able to put it down until you've finished the last word. The horrifying world Smolen has painted with such imagination takes us on a frightening journey to a place we can only pray doesn't exist. If you like to be terrified and you're not satisfied until your senses scream, SATAN'S MIRROR with its fear-provoking action is a must read. SATAN'S MIRROR, is a book for those who love being terrorized. BOO!!!! Buy the book. PS Even the cover scared me.
Roxanne Smolen writes excellent sci-fi for both teens and adults, some with strong adult themes. Her imagination is strong and her quality writing are evident in her work.
